Health and fitness

Mobirise

The topic which I chose is health & fitness. Let me start by telling you what these terms mean. Health is “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being” (WHO). Fitness is defined as “the ability to carry out daily tasks with vigour and alertness, without undue fatigue, and with ample energy to enjoy leisure-time pursuits and respond to emergencies” (CDC). Nowadays, many people talk about healthy lifestyle and how to pursue it. What is it really?

According to my point of view, healthy lifestyle is achieved when a person is not only healthy physically, but also mentally. Physical health is an important aspect of our life for it gives us freedom to do any type of activity that we set out to do. People love having hobbies which are physically demanding, such as cycling, going to the gym, skating, skiing, hiking etc. If we eat well, we get enough energy. Of course, the assumption: “eat more, have more energy” doesn´t always apply. A person needs to be careful and we need to understand the basics of nutrition to truly become aware of what our body needs. Every day it needs carbs, fats, proteins, vitamins and minerals. It works just like a mathematical equation. The income or in other words, what you eat needs to be equal to the outcome, the energy you use. If you put in more energy in form of food, your body stores it as fat and that can become dangerous if it goes to the extreme. Eating less than required imposes its dangers too. Your body needs energy not only for activities which you want to do in your free time, but it needs its fuel for basic processes like digestion and respiration. If you don´t consume enough energy, these processes will eventually shut down.

Mental health is as important as physical health. If you are physically healthy, but you suffer mentally, you can never reach the true essence of your life. There are different mental diseases that people suffer from. They can be caused by overproduction or lack of production of certain hormones that our body needs to start a chemical reaction in our brain which produces emotions. Many people are ashamed to say that they have a problem and the live with it all their life. It is important to remember that going to see a doctor or going to see a psychologist is the same thing. Just because you are treating you mental health, it doesn´t mean that there is something crazy about you and people should look at you differently. Unfortunately, many people still do it.

Inherent parts of the topic of health are illnesses and diseases. There are illnesses that we face every day like cold, flue, sore throat, headaches, migraines etc. These are not fatal if you have a good immune system. The doctor gives you medicine and you are cured after few days. On the other side of the spectrum, there are illnesses that are fatal and we do not have cure for them. We can treat them and help a person live few more years, but they will never be cured. One of these illnesses is cancer. I personally do believe that the science will advance to that point that there will not be one person in the world who would suffer from illness. Until that time, we need to take good care of ourselves and others.

As I have previously mentioned, many people nowadays enjoy going to the gym in their free time. People have jobs which don´t require physical activity, so to keep in a good shape, a person needs to look for it in other places. There are different components that fitness includes. You need to consider cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular endurance, strength and power, flexibility, balance, speed. These can be acquired when you perform several types of exercises. When you want to build your cardiorespiratory endurance, you can go running on a treadmill, rowing or cycling on air bike. To achieve muscular endurance, strength and power, one must lift weights and challenge their muscles with more weight every time. Exercise that is very common is yoga; this can help you achieve flexibility and balance.

But why do people go to the gym? What is their motivation? There are people who do it because they understand their bodies and they want to be healthy and strong, but there are people who start going to the gym only because they feel pressured by the society to do so. They have never enjoyed exercise and they never will, but they do it, just so they have the accountability of their peers. If a person is on social media, there is unlimited access to influencers who motivate people to exercise daily. Some of them are true and honest, and they really do it because they want to help people, but everything is business and this is no exception….
