Maturita - ústna časť

Education is the process of acquiring new knowledge, skills and values by systematic  teaching and learning, especially at schools. There are various types of school levels that one  may attend. First, you go to kindergarden when you are 3-6 years old. Education is presented  in form of games. It is more concerned with sensory - motor skills of children rather than their  fast cognitive advancement. Teachers also train their memory. Every one of us for sure  remembers concerts that we made for our parents either at the end of the year or for a special  occasion. These were created with a goal in mind. It helped us build our memory muscles. We  needed to remember choreography for a dance, lyrics to several songs and texts to different  poems or stories. All of that was fun for us, but it was also the way we learnt. When a child is  older, usually one year before we go to schools, teachers in kindergarden start our preparation  process where we learn to draw straight lines or count to 20 or even write our own names.

When we pass a psychological exam that every child needs to take when they want to  go to school, we enter the door of elementary schools. It is divided into two levels – primary  and secondary. Primary level lasts 4 years and the aim is to learn the basics of language, math  and sciences. Children usually have only 4 or 5 lessons per day because their concentration  span is not very high. When we reach our 5th year of studies, we enter secondary level of education. Number of lessons is higher, teachers are different and we also have more subjects.  These two levels provide us with the basic knowledge about the world around us.

After successfully finishing our elementary school, we have a choice. We can choose  from several different high schools. Either we go to schools which specialize in one field of  study and we finish it not only with maturita exam, but also with certification in that particular  field or we can continue in the general education and apply for secondary grammar schools.  The choice is up to you and your parents. When you finish high school, you can find a job and  start living the real life or you can continue in your studies at university.

Many people say that university studies were the best years of their life. They found  friends who are with them until this day or some of them even met their spouse there. Either  way, people love to talk about it. University studies are divided into levels – bachelors and  masters. In Slovakia, bachelor level takes 3 years to complete that is 6 terms and masters
takes 2 years or 4 terms. Each term you attend several classes taught by professors and  specialists in those topics. At the end of each term, there is the exam period during which you  must prove that you´ve learnt everything required. When a person wants to get a degree, they  need to write a thesis and defend it in front of committee. After they do so, they have a  ceremony where they receive a diploma.

During all of the levels of education, a student may go on an exchange program. It can  be provided by the school or they can ask an agency for help. One of the most common  exchange programs in our schools is Erazmus. Elementary schools create bonds with schools  form other counties and they visit each other for a short period of time. Some of our high schools give their students opportunities to go to a different country for a whole year.  Students usually choose counties like England, Scotland, Ireland or states in the USA. If a  student doesn´t use this advantage during their studies at lower levels of education, they still  have the opportunity at university. Universities have usually partnerships with countries all over the world, which have the same specialization. The length of the exchange studies can be  from 3 months up to several years. Advantage of exchange programs is that you create a  network all over the world and then after you finish schools, you have more doors open.

In my opinion, people should learn all their life. They shouldn´t stop the process just  because they finished school. There are many ways that can help us with that. The internet is  full of material which can provide great value to us. You can start studying online, for  example one website with classes is Skillshare or you can read books. If you want to learn a
new language, go to language school in your free time. People who retire can apply to  university of the 3rd generation and they can study anything there. I have a friend, who is a  former professor of Russian language at university and now that he is retired, he decided to  study gardening. Our lives are too short to learn everything, but we can become a better  person every day.
